Watering Your Lawn the Right Way: The Secret to a Greener, Healthier Yard

A lush, green lawn doesn't happen by accident. While mowing and fertilizing play an important role, proper watering is one of the biggest factors in keeping your grass healthy all season long. Surprisingly, many homeowners water too often, at the wrong time of day, or simply apply too little water.
At Espinoza Landscaping, we help homeowners create beautiful lawns that thrive—not just survive. Here are our top lawn watering tips to keep your yard looking its best.
1. Water Early in the Morning
The best time to water your lawn is between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
Morning watering allows moisture to soak deep into the soil before the heat of the day causes evaporation. It also gives the grass blades plenty of time to dry, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.
Avoid watering during the hottest part of the afternoon, when much of the water evaporates before reaching the roots. Evening watering may seem convenient, but wet grass overnight can encourage mold and lawn diseases.
2. Water Deeply—Not Every Day
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is watering lightly every day.
Instead, give your lawn a deep watering two or three times per week. This encourages the roots to grow deeper into the soil, making your lawn stronger and more resistant to heat, drought, and stress.
A lawn with deep roots is healthier, greener, and requires less maintenance over time.
3. How Much Water Does Your Lawn Need?
Most established lawns need approximately 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. During periods of extreme summer heat, some grass varieties may require a little more.
An easy way to measure your sprinkler output is to place several empty tuna cans around your lawn while watering. When each can has collected about ½ inch of water, you've applied enough for one watering session.
4. Watch for Signs Your Lawn Needs Water
Your lawn will often tell you when it's thirsty.
Look for these signs:
Grass blades begin to fold or curl.
The lawn develops a dull, bluish-gray color.
Footprints remain visible after walking across the grass.
The soil feels dry a few inches below the surface.
Water only when your lawn actually needs it instead of following a rigid daily schedule.
5. Don't Forget the Mulch
If your landscape includes flower beds, shrubs, or trees, adding a layer of mulch helps retain moisture, reduces evaporation, and keeps plant roots cooler during hot weather.
Mulch also suppresses weeds and improves soil quality over time, making it one of the simplest ways to reduce watering needs.
6. Check Your Sprinkler System
A broken sprinkler head or poorly aimed sprinkler can waste thousands of gallons of water every year.
Take a few minutes each month to inspect your irrigation system:
Replace damaged sprinkler heads.
Adjust sprinklers so they water the lawn—not the driveway or sidewalk.
Check for leaks.
Update watering schedules as the seasons change.
A well-maintained irrigation system saves water, lowers utility bills, and keeps your lawn looking its best.
